Internationally recognised short course in the principles of FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING (CFPA), 2018
Who should attend?
Local authority fire safety officers, insurance risk management / engineering professionals and fire safety consultants who need to develop their skills regarding the interpretation and application of the BS 7974 framework for the preparation of rational designs as indicated in Annex B of SANS 10400-T:2011
Entry requirements
Delegates should have a thorough knowledge of the application of the fire component of the National Building Regulations, including the Act and SANS 10400- PartT.
Delegates accepted on the course will need to complete and submit a pre-course assignment on the Qualitative Design Review component of BS 7974.

- Introduction to the fire engineering process, BS 7974:2001, associated Published Documents and a review of the QDR process
- Aspects of fire engineering science and fire engineering terminology
- Overview of the following Published Documents:
- PD-1 - Initiation and development of fire within the enclosure of origin
- PD-2 - Spread of smoke and toxic gases within and beyond the enclosure of origin
- PD 3 - Structural response and fire spread beyond the enclosure of origin
- PD-4 - Detection of fire and activation of fire protection systems
- PD-6 - Human factors: Life safety strategies – Occupant evacuation, behaviour and condition
- PD 8 – Property protection, business and mission continuity, and resilience
- Fire and evacuation modelling
- An introduction to BS 9999 - Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings
Assessment includes written assessments, classroom exercises and team assignments.
Course recognition and certification
This course is a customised version of the UK FPA NOS 5.2 Life Safety Engineering short course that has been tailored to suit local conditions.
This course also satisfies the requirements of the CFPA Europe Certificate in Principles of Fire Safety Engineering.
Successful candidates will receive the following certificates:
- CFPA Europe Certificate in Principles of Fire Safety Engineering issued by the UK FPA Training Division.
- Understanding the Principles of Fire Safety Engineering issued by the FPASA Fire College.
Facilitation
The course will be facilitated by suitably qualified and experienced professionals from the Technical Division of the FPASA.
Class sizes will be limited to help ensure adequate discussion, understanding and application of the topics covered.
