Suffient Registrants?
Absolutely not!
That's why we need to encourage all practitioners in the fire industry to register with the ECSA.
Why ECSA?
The Process. The Process, via ECSA, is rigorous. In a nutshell, it separates the boys from the men (feminists please forgive me for using that expression).
There are multiple reviews of a persons credentials prior to them having the honour of being called an FPSP registrant with the ECSA.
If there is an unethical practitioner, they can be reported to the ECSA, face a trial and if found guilty, banned from practicing in that category forever. Thus, the ECSA act as a watchdog so that each individual human does not have to do that in isolation.
Simplified Steps of the ECSA process:
1. A preliminary inspection of the candidates application form prior to desktop review.
2. A desktop review of the candidates qualifications assessing whether the candidate meets the ECSA Outcome Criteria for the specific category applied.
3. A Panel Interview with professionals in the industry. This is a critical step to ensure the candidate did not plagiarise on their application form and actually did the work. This panel interview tests the candidates knowledge in the field which they claim professionalisation.
Focus is applied to a candidates academic AND experience background.
Grandfather's Clause: Don't worry, there is also a special form for those with no academic qualification, but who have extensive experience and have worked under the tutelage of a mentor in their formative years, together with short courses attended.
Advice for the General public:
Always verify the credentials of the people you are paying millions to for your sprinkler system installation. Do not blindly trust the designer. Do not trust the designer to pick the installer. Do not trust the installer to pick the sprinkler system inspector. Please do your due dilligence. If in doubt, contact your insurers risk engineering department (newsflash: that's why they are there because if they protect your interest, they automatically protect their financial investment). As far as possible, please execute a form of a tender process - it may take time in the beginning, but will end up saving you millions later on. Vet your contractors.

Sprinkler System Designers/ Rational Designers
All fire specialists working on engineering design projects, e.g. sprinkler engineering designs and/ or rational designs are supposed to already be ECSA registered as this consitutes engineering works. If not already done, please ensure anyone conducting a design for you is ECSA registered or, at the very least, in the process of ECSA registration.
